Well, this is just Batshit Insane, but then, so is a great deal of what comes out of Japan, and that doesn’t make it any less awesome. Here is master bartender Hiroyasu Kayama of Tokyo’s Ben Fiddich bar, creating Campari from scratch.

As one does…

Kayama and Ben Fiddich specialize in creating spirits and cocktails from scratch, and by “from scratch” we mean that he grinds carmine beetles up to make his Campari red. Each drink takes, as you might imagine, as long as a food course to prepare, and may involve mortar and pestle, immersion blenders, liquid nitrogen, or an electric pentacle for all we know! Nothing is impossible with an alchemist like Kayama.

The video suffers from Engrish subtitles, with caraway rendered “callaway,” among other goofs, but is so beautifully shot that one forgives the errors. This is true booze porn, photographed with more care than most of Jenna Jameson’s oeuvre and half of Kate Moss’s too. There’s no recipe given because frankly, you’re never, ever going to do this yourself and everyone knows it. But it is glorious to watch.

Now, who’s up for a Negroni? Should only take 45 minutes to craft and I’m feeling ambitious, so warm up the electric pentacle!
